Strategic foundations of the new institute merging KTL and Stakes outlined

The preparatory process for establishing a new research and expert institute on health and welfare (“merger of KTL and Stakes”) is on the schedule. The Supervising Committee, headed by Secretary of State, Ilkka Oksala from the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, has now agreed on the future institute’s strategic foundations, as proposed by the Steering Committee, chaired by prof. Pekka Puska, the Director General of KTL. The following steps in the process will involve defining the core activities and thereafter drawing the organizational structure of the new institute later in the autumn.

The name of the new institute will be announced in August, when the Government will pass to the Parliament the proposal for law on the new institute. The Director General and the high leadership will be appointed towards the end of the year.

Merging the two existing national institutes, KTL (National Public Health Institute) and STAKES (National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health) was proposed by the Ministry last year to strengthen the research and development work in the health and welfare area and to increase the cooperation in the area, in order to better meet the challenges of health and wellbeing in the Finnish society.

The new institute will start operating at the beginning of the year 2009.
