The portal is based on Semantic Web technologies developed by the National Semantic Web Ontology Project (FinnONTO) at the Helsinki University of Technology in 2005–2007. The continuation project of FinnONTO, Semantic Web 2.0., develops the communal uses of Semantic Web technologies in 2008–2010.
The content is transformed into a machine-understandable format by agreeing on common health terminology (ontology) and the way of describing the content to the machines (metadata). This makes for more versatile and user-oriented ways of combining data and improves the relevancy of search results.
