Finnish National Nutrition Surveillance System

The Finnish National Nutrition Surveillance System (FNNSS) was launched in February 1995. Its main purpose is to collect, interpret, evaluate, and distribute data on the status of nutrition in Finland, and to access the need for measures to promote nutrition and health policies. In addition to policy makers and officials, it communicates data on nutrition for health care professionals, researches, teachers, journalists, and for those working in food industry, trade, and large-scale catering.

FNNSS is located at the National Public Health Institute (KTL). It has researcher-coodinator working at KTL's Nutrition Unit. A group of experts with ten members has been nominated to supervise the system.

The most important method for achieving its purposes is to publish regularly Nutrition Reports. Up to now, four reports have been published, the first being published in 1996. However, these Nutrition Reports have been published in Finnish. Thus, the publication "Nutrition in Finland" and this site were made to present data on health, nutrition and food consumption in Finland for foreigners. Its main aims are to give a brief overview of the Finnish diet, how it has improved remarkably and contributed to a better health status of the population. The key roles in this succes story have been played by the health care sector, the educational system, and the food industry.

FNNSS produces Nutrition Reports biannually. The latest one was published in March, 2004. The English summary of the report is available here.
