Public Health and Chronic Diseases

In the area of public health and chronic disease prevention KTL's main research areas are cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, health behaviour, nutrition and health promotion. In the following some of the main research programmes, projects and registers concerning this area.


Cardiovascular diseases

The National FINRISK Study : A large survey on risk factors of chronic diseases carried out every five years.

MONICA Risk, Genetics, Archiving and Monigraph MORGAM : A multinational study to explore the relationship between the development of cardiovascfular diseases and their classic and genetic fisk factors.
WHO Monica Project : Multinational MONItoring trends and determinants in CArdiovascular disease.
Finnish Myocardical Infraction Register FINAMI
Finnish Stroke Register FINSTROKE
Cardiovascular Diseases Register : The cardiovascular database provides detailed data on the occurance of coronary heart disease in Finland.


Health Behaviour and Health Promotion

National Health Behaviour Monitoring Systems : Includes four different health behaviour surveys.
FINBALT Health Monitor : A collaborative health behaviour monitoring system in Baltic countries and Finland.
European Network on Young People and Tobacco ENYPAT : European-wide network for health professionals interested in youth smoking.
QUIT & WIN : World-wide contest for quitting smoking.

Diabetes

DIPP - The Diabetes Prediction and Prevention Study, The Dipp Nutrition Study : This study investigates whether there is a link between the diet in prenatal age and during the first five years of infancy with the development of diabetes in children who are genetically at risk.
TRIGR - Trial to Reduce IDDM in the Genetically at Risk : This study is designed to determine whether the risk of developing type 1 diabetes can be reduced by elimination of cow milk protein in the diet of infants during the first 6 to 8 months of life in babies who are genetically at risk of type 1 diabetes.
