Background
INTARESE brings together a team of leading European scientists and research institutes in the areas of epidemiology, environmental science and biosciences to collaborate on developing and applying new, integrated approaches to assessing of environmental health risks and consequences. INTARESE project is designed to support implementation of the European Environment and Health Action Plan ( http://ec.europa.eu/environment/health/action_plan.htm), by providing the methods and tools that are essential to enable integrated assessment of environment and health risks.

Objectives
1. to develop a conceptual framework for bringing together the latest scientific evidence across all relevant environmental sectors and disciplines as a basis for integrated assessment of both environmental and health impacts and risks
2. to address the scientific and information deficits on environment and health stressors and their impacts and risks, that currently exist
3. to build an operational toolbox for carrying out integrated assessments that can be applied to different stressors, environmental media and and agents
4. to apply this approach to undertake integrated assessments for a range of key policy areas, including transport, housing, agricultural land use, water management, household chemicals, waste management and climate

Description
INTARESE project is composed of seven sub-projects (SP's), of which five focus on scientific research, one focuses on user consultation and one is consortium management. The scientific research SP's are: SP1 integrated assessment methods, SP2 monitoring and surveillance, SP3 policy assessments, SP4 integrated assessment system and SP5 integration and training.

KTL risk analysis group participates mainly in SP1, integrated assessment methods, and in particular its workpackage (WP) 1.4 risk characterization. With a smaller contribution KTL risk analysis group also participates in WP's 1.1 integrated assessment framework, 1.3 exposure - health effect, 1.5 cross-cutting issues, 4.1 toolbox design, 4.2 toolbox construction as well as in consulting the policy assessment WP's in SP3.
