This department was founded in 1995, when population-level health research was transferred from the Social Insurance Institution of Finland to the National Public Health Institute. Our work focuses on the most important public health issues and their determinants and on public health and monitoring the health of the population. We provide information about health and functional capacity as well as about factors influencing them within the entire population and different sociodemographic groups. The department conducts research and development work to promote the health and functional capacity of Finnish people and to enhance health monitoring. Furthermore, we study individual and societal determinants of common chronic conditions.
We conduct epidemiological, clinical, immunological and biochemical studies, as well as studies related to clinical physiology and functional capacity. The methods applied range from population health interview and examination surveys to clinical and register-based studies, and from statistical analyses to a wide variety of laboratory tests. A significant resource in our department is the nationwide studies and their register-based follow up.
