Unit for Population-based Health Research
| The unit studies common chronic diseases and functional limitations and their causes, the promotion of health and functional capacity, as well as the prevention of diseases and the improvement of public health in general. To this end, we conduct and coordinate extensive population studies and use statistical sources and registers. We are responsible for our share of national health monitoring and related international cooperation. The health monitoring conducted at our department produces reviews (Health in Finland) and products based on European projects. Our unit works in close cooperation especially with the Laboratory of Population Research. We participate in major research and development organisations with researchers and experts from the National Public Health Institute and from other governmental institutes and universities. The main topics of the studies include diseases of the circulatory system and locomotors system, cancer, diabetes, certain respiratory diseases, mental health problems, disability for work and functional limitations, as well as the importance of nutrition as the cause of and protective factor in chronic diseases. The data from the Mobile Clinic Health Examination, Mini-Finland, FinRisk 97and Health 2000 surveys are also used in studies on the development of public health and functional capacity and when analysing the causes of these developments. This data also constitutes the basis for the study on the health of the elderly and on health disparities between various socio demographic groups. |
