FINSTROKE is a Finnish stroke register, which aims to monitor and investigate the mortality, incidence, case fatality, and prognosis of acute stroke events. This register continues the work of the FINMONICA Stroke Register, which was operating in Finland as a part of the WHO MONICA Project during 1983-1992. The planned monitoring period of the FINSTROKE register is 1993-1997. The monitored areas are the city of Turku, the city of Kuopio and certain adjacent rural communities. For part of the monitoring period, data have been collected also from the Joensuu area, North Karelia. The aim is to register according to a standardized protocol each stroke event occurring in these populations. Cardiovascular risk factor levels are being surveyed in these same populations every five years by the National FINRISK Study. In practice, the FINSTROKE project is being carried out in collaboration with local hospital districts, clinical researchers, and the National Public Health Institute (KTL).
