With a strong emphasis on social and behavioral sciences, we investigate theory- and evidence-based methods for disease prevention and health promotion. Our goal is to develop and test practices for real-life settings such as the Finnish social and health care system and, more recently, the army garrisons of the Finnish Defence Forces. We collaborate and form linkages between and within different public and private sectors. Our main demonstration area is the Päijät-Häme Province where we work under the framework of the GOAL Program for Good Aging in the Lahti region (http://www.palmenia.helsinki.fi/ikihyva/).

In addition to research activities, we contribute to Finnish population health as experts in health promotion. We also train health professionals as well as teach health promotion and disease prevention on undergraduate and post-graduate level in the Finnish Universities.

Our current research activities include:

- The GOAL Lifestyle Implementation Trial To Prevent Type 2

- The GOAL Intervention to Promote Functional Capacity Among The Ageing Population

- The GOAL Current Care Guidelines Intervention

- The DefenceNutri Program to Promote Healthy Eating among conscripts in the Finnish Defence Forces
