The MONICA Data Centre is the data co-ordinating centre of the WHO MONICA Project. The Project was established in the early 1980s in many centres around the world to MONItor trends in CArdiovascular diseases, and to relate these to changes in risk factors and treatment in the population over a ten year period. It was set up to explain the diverse trends in cardiovascular disease mortality which were observed from the 1970s onwards. There were a total of 32 MONICA Collaborating Centres in 21 countries. The total population monitored was ten million men and women aged 25-64 years. The ten year data collection has been completed, and most of the main results have already been published. Information on the WHO MONICA Project and its result can be found at: http://www.ktl.fi/monica/.
