Infectious Disease Epidemiology

Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Control (INFE)

This department provides information related to infectious diseases. This information has a significant impact to decisions at both societal level (health policy, health protection) and individual level (health habits, behaviour, and risk-taking).

Our department gathers information about the occurrence of infectious diseases, epidemics and suspected epidemics, as well as the related risk factors. We provide instructions for municipal authorities to obtain and manage epidemic information and, when necessary, assist them in these matters.

Our department is the national coordinator for the EU monitoring network of infectious diseases. We also engage in coordination tasks to obtain information about and prevent biological hazards.

In addition to applied epidemiological research, our HIV laboratory and viral vaccine laboratory conduct basic research in the field of microbiology and cell biology.

Another of our department’s tasks is the quality control of laboratories specialising in clinical diagnostic microbiology.
