Tunstall-Pedoe produced several revisions of the original MONICA Protocol and has been
extensively involved in the preparation of the MONICA Manual, and has been Rapporteur of
the Project since its inception. Dr Kuulasmaa is Chief Scientist to the Project and Head
of the MONICA Data Centre. He has organised the centralisation of all MONICA core
collaborative data, assured their quality and coordinated the analyses since 1984.
The MONICA Project is highly indebted to Mary Jane Watson and Margaret Hill,
Cardiovascular Diseases, Department of Noncommunicable Disease Prevention, WHO who
prepared The Manual; and to Tuula Virman-Ojanen, MONICA Data Centre, National Public
