6.3. Height, weight, waist and hip measurements

6.3.1. Specification of data

The measurement procedures are described in Section 1.4.6 of Part III of the MONICA Manual (1). Any variation between the RUAs in the measurement procedures and quality of the data are described in the reports on quality assessment of weight and height measurements (7) and quality assessment of waist and hip measurements (8).

The following extract from the Core data transfer format - survey data of the MONICA Manual (1) specifies the format in which the data were transferred to the MONICA Data Centre:

6.3.2. Weight

For the data book, weight (Table 6.3.2.) was used as defined in the data transfer format.

6.3.3. Height

Height (Table 6.3.3.) was used as defined in the data transfer format.

6.3.4. Body mass index

Body mass index (BMI) (Table 6.3.4.) was calculated as:

WEIGHT(kg)/[HEIGHT(m)]2

BMI had insufficient data if WEIGHT or HEIGHT had insufficient data.

6.3.5. Waist

Waist (Table 6.3.5.) was used as defined in the data transfer format. The measurement of waist was introduced in MONICA Manual in 1990, and therefore is not available for the initial survey and for many RUAs for the middle survey.

6.3.6. Hip

Hip (Table 6.3.6.) was used as defined in the data transfer format. The measurement of hip was introduced in MONICA Manual in 1990, and therefore is not available for the initial survey and for many RUAs for the middle survey.

6.3.7. Waist to hip-ratio

Waist to hip ratio (WHR) (Table 6.3.7.) was calculated as:

100(%)×(WAIST(cm)/HIP(cm).

WHR had insufficient data if WAIST or HIP had insufficient data.
