The measurement procedures are described in Section 1.4.2 of Part III of the MONICA Manual (1). Any variation between the RUAs in the measurement procedures and quality of the data are described in the report on quality assessment of data on menopausal status and hormones (14).
The following extract from the Core data transfer format - survey data of the MONICA Manual (1) specifies the format in which the data were transferred to the MONICA Data Centre:
| NAME | VERSION | SPECIFICATION AND CODES | CHARACTERS |
|---|---|---|---|
| MENOP | 6,7 | "Are you still having monthly periods?" 1 = yes, as usual 2 = yes, but irregularly 3 = no 8 = not relevant 9 = insufficient data |
|__| |
| AGEM | 6,7 | "How old were you when your periods stopped completely?" 88 = not relevant 99 = insufficient data |

Table 6.6.2 reports the proportions of the categories of menopausal status in the population, as specified in data item MENOP.
Table 6.6.3 reports the mean age when the periods stopped completely. The denominator are those who no longer have monthly periods (i.e. MENOP = 3).
NOTE: The results are difficult to interpret for age groups other than 55-64 years.
Table 6.6.4 reports the proportions of the use of sex hormones among women who no longer have monthly periods (i.e. MENOP = 3).
Table 6.6.5 reports the proportions of the use of contraceptives in population.
