A member of a MORGAM cohort who had an event of interest during the
follow-up. The main broad categories of events in MORGAM are CHD events,
strokes and deaths, but the exact definition needs to specified separately for
each data analysis. See also "Selection of cases and cohort subsample".
This is a common term for the cases and the
subcohort in the case-cohort design. Using
mathematical terminology, the case-cohort set is the union of the set of cases
and the subcohort.
Key 0 is the code fixed on the tube in which a blood
or DNA sample is transferred from an MPC to a MORGAM
Laboratory. It may be a written, printed or barcoded local key, but it may
also be a key assigned by the MDC (e.g.
Key 2).
Key 1 is the unique identification number of the study subjects (i.e. the
members of the Cohorts) in MORGAM. Key 1 consists of the
codes for MPC, RU,
Cohort and a study Serial number of the subject. The components of Key 1
can be found in most of the Data Transfer Formats
of MORGAM. Key 1 is assigned by the MPCs.
Key 2 is a unique identification number of 7 characters for DNA samples in
MORGAM. Key 2 does not carry any of the information of Key 1,
and is assigned by the MDC solely for the use of
identifying the DNA samples and the genotypic data transfer between the genotyping laboratories
and the MDC.
National Public Health Institute of Finland. The MDC and
the MCL were located at KTL up to 31st December
2008. On 1st January 2009, KTL and the National Research and
Development Centre for Welfare and Health (STAKES) were amalgamated to form
the new National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).
MORGAM Biomarker Laboratory, located at Johannes Gutenberg-University,
Mainz, where biomarkers will be assessed from serum and plasma samples in the
MORGAM Biomarker SubStudy.
MORGAM Central Laboratory, located at the Department of Chronic Disease
Prevention of THL, Helsinki. DNA from the
MPCs will be stored, genotyped and aliquotted for transfer to other
MORGAM Laboratories in the MCL. The MCL also extracts the DNA for some of
the MPCs.
MORGAM Data Centre, located at the Department of Chronic Disease
Prevention of THL, Helsinki. The baseline and follow-up data from
the MPCs and the Participating Laboratories are collected
to the MDC, where their quality are assessed and the study database is
maintained.
MORGAM Management Group. Under the leadership of the Project
Coordinator, The MMG has the overall responsibility for ensuring the
success of the Project.
Reporting Unit, which usually defines the geographic area which the cohort
represents. The RUs are natural units for the data collection, but they are
often too
small for the data analysis, for which they are usually combined into RUAs.
Reporting Unit Aggregate. It is a combination of RUs used in MORGAM analyses. A standard
set of RUAs has been defined for the MORGAM quality assessment reports, data
books and selection of cases and subcohort for genotyping, but for some data
analyses different RUAs may be more adequate because of availability of data
etc.
This term can be used for any subset of the MORGAM cohort, but usually it
is used for the random subsample of the cohort selected for genotyping in the
case-cohort design. See also "Selection of
cases and cohort subsample". (The case-cohort design is a modification of
the full prospective follow-up design rather than the case-control design.)
