In this section, we give an assessment of the quality of the data on specific MORGAM baseline data items and recommendations upon the use of different items in data analyses. General aspects of the baseline measurements, such as the target populations, selection and recruitment of the cohort members, and the periods of the baseline examinations are assessed in the separate section Description and quality of the cohorts. There is a separate section also for the Genetic data, although they are actually baseline data.

Definition of quality scores for questionnaire items

The characteristics and quality of the data are summarized and quantified using simple quality scores. Below are definitions for quality scores which are used in several subsections. Additional quality scores for specific topics are defined in the respective subsections.

Insufficient Data Score (IDS):

IDS = 2 if proportion of "insufficient data" < 5%,
1 if 5 <= proportion of "insufficient data" <= 15%,
0 if proportion of "insufficient data" > 15%,
dnp if data not provided by the MPC and hence "insufficient data" for the entire cohort.

The raw data are used in calculating IDS.

Questionnaire Comparability Score (QCS):

QCS = 2 if there is an exact question in the local questionnaire, or if the MORGAM data can be extracted from the local questionnaire to match the MORGAM data transfer format exactly,
1 if an alternative formulation of the question was used in the local questionnaire compared to the MORGAM questionnaire, and the data can not be extracted fully,
0 if no questionnaire is available at the MPC, no questions on data item under consideration in the local questionnaire, or the formulation of the question in the local questionnaire is significantly different from the MORGAM questionnaire,
dnp if IDS is dnp.

QCS is used to assess the comparability of the local baseline questionnaires and the MORGAM data items. It does not consider possible errors in the algorithm used for extracting the MORGAM data from the local data. Therefore, for more complex situations, such as the smoking data, a separate quality scores for the algorithm used for the extraction will be defined. The original questionnaires used by the RUAs and their English translations are available in the MDC and are used in assigning the QCS.

Questionnaire Summary Score (QSS):

QSS = 2 if the sum of QCS and IDS is 3 or 4,
1 if both QCS and IDS are 1,
0 if the QCS or IDS is 0,
dnp if IDS is dnp.
